If you'd like to have a decent chess database, but like me are either cheap or broke and don't want to go the pirate route, this may help. First you'll need the database itself. There are a few free options available. My current preference is for “SCID vs. PC” which is an updated version of the free SCID database. It's available for download from Sourceforge: SCID is fairly complex, but there are tutorials on YouTube that explain the various functions pretty well. SCID Tutorial Learn Chess Openings with SCID Database Study Chess Games with SCID database There's also an online text tutorial: Next you'll need an analysis engine. Houdini 1.5a has long been the strongest free chess engine available, but I've recently read that the newest version of Stockfish is stronger (though the CCRL still puts Houdini 1.5a ahead). Since SCID supports several analysis engines you can install both if you like. Download for Houdini 1.5a Download for Stockfish 2.3.1 You'll also need some games. The two largest free games collections that I know of are the Million Base and ICOPY databases. Million Base now includes 2.2 Million games and has been updated with 'The Week In Chess' games up to January 2013 The ICOPY database includes a whopping 4.6 million games, with a 2/16/2013 update available. There's obviously going to be a lot of overlap between these, but I don't know yet if ICOPY includes all the games in Millionbase. You'll want to keep your database up to date by downloading TWIC pgn files each week. I don't know if this is what you need, but you can use the Command Line to copy all those PGNs to one big file and then import that file. For simplicity let's sat you've copied all the pgn's to a directory at 'C: pgnfiles'. Open your command line; how you do that will vary depending on your version of Windows. Type in: CD C: pgnfiles copy *.pgn tournament.pgn That should copy all your PGNs to one file. Depending on your version of Windows you made need to do a 'copy *.pgn tournament.txt' instead and then rename the resulting file to a pgn to keep it from trying to copy itself. Hope that helps. Currently viewing: » » Fritz 5.32 Fritz 5.32 was the first chess program I bought for my first PC back in 1998, and it's now one of the best all-round free chess downloads on the net. Use it for playing, analysis, and managing databases. The program comes with the old, but strong, fritz 5.32 engine, and fritz 6 can be used from. There are also a few other free Chessbase engines for download. Aside from playing against fritz, you can use program to analyze your games, study opening statistics, and organize engine matches. One of its most useful abilities is to create and search large databases in either pgn or cbv format. You'll need an opening book such as the hand-tuned.You could download a large database from, or view the latest games from.
